How Can Coaching Improve Thoughts, Situations or Emotions?
An example of a coaching model that I use to help people manage or find solutions for the thoughts and emotions which are inhibiting their behaviour is CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy).
For instance, one simple introductory exercise that I work through with clients, similar to a well known CBT approach known as the ABC Model, is to ask people to reflect on an issue that they find is a repeated problem in the following way:
- Describe what the typical situation is in which the problem arises
- Note down your thoughts, beliefs and feelings which the situation triggers
- Describe how you then typically act.
- Make a note of the consequences of these actions and how you then feel.
In a coaching session using this model I would then explore in depth with you what are your options at each stage for breaking the negative cycle. We would consider:
- Actions that may help prevent the problem situation arising again
- Things you can say to yourself or do when the negative thoughts arise to help put them in perspective or approach them rationally and positively
- Actions you can take to break away from negative thoughts and feelings or deal with them differently
- What you can do afterwards to help you feel better about the consequences.
People find that carrying out the constructive actions and options that they have discussed with the help of a coach can bring improvements in their own abilities to cope with difficult situations and increased confidence.

How Do Coaching Sessions Work?
You can purchase individualised telephone coaching either as a one off, stand-alone coaching session or as a programme of sessions.
The sessions aim to assist you in making a practicable and often enjoyable movement to what and where you want to be. For each coaching session we arrange for you to call me at an agreed time when I guarantee to be available.
The Initial Coaching Session
This initial telephone coaching session will give you the opportunity to talk through the issues that are of concern to you and to come up with initial strategies to help you on the path towards resolving them.
Before the session you will be asked to complete a short questionnaire (provided by email) which can then be used as a starting point for discussion in the session and facilitates a personal assessment tailored to your individual needs.
At your choice, the initial session can be provided on a one-off, stand-alone basis or as an introductory session for a full programme of sessions (see below).
The content of the session is tailored to your particular needs. It will conclude with you having initial suggested steps to take in relation to your concerns be they self esteem, anxiety, stress, work, relationship or other matters.
On the basis of the initial session you can then decide whether further sessions will be helpful for you. For some clients one session will be sufficient, others will want a full programme of sessions to make the most of the coaching support and expertise available to meet your individual needs and wishes.
Programme of Coaching Sessions
If after your initial session you decide that further coaching sessions will be helpful for the issues that you want to improve on, then a programme of further sessions can be offered to address the issues.
The number of sessions in the programme can be adjusted to suit your individual circumstances and intervals between sessions can also be matched to your particular requirements and budget. Some people will want weekly sessions whereas others may only require fortnightly or monthly sessions for their individualised programme.
What is Included in a Coaching Programme?
A coaching programme will include the following:
- An appropriate number of telephone coaching sessions tailored to your individual needs.
- A Project Plan will be produced for you and updated at each session setting out
- Outcomes aimed for
- Actions agreed for you to try out
- Any assignments for you to undertake between sessions.
- Progress on actions will be reviewed at each session and any learning points or assignments completed will be discussed to assist progress.
