Physical symptoms


The way we react to stress can lead to physical symptoms for which there may be no obvious cause. You must see your doctor if you are worried, but if there is no apparent medical reason for your symptoms they may be due to the effects of prolonged anxiety (Fight or Flight) caused by stress. The body and mind are closely linked and stress or tension can lead to any of the following physical problems:

  • Sleep disturbances
  • Back, shoulder or neck pain
  • Tension or migraine headaches
  • Upset or acid stomach, cramps, heartburn, gas, irritable bowel syndrome
  • Constipation, diarrhoea
  • Weight gain or loss, eating disorders
  • Hair loss
  • Tense muscles
  • Exhaustion
  • Irregular heartbeat, palpitations
  • Asthma or shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Sweaty palms or hands
  • Cold hands or feet
  • Skin problems
  • Periodontal disease, jaw pain
  • Reproductive problems
  • Immune system suppression: more colds, flu, infections
  • Growth inhibition
  • High blood pressure
 
Emotional symptoms

Emotional symptoms such as anxiety or depression should also be checked with a doctor, but they can often be stress-related. In any case, the following emotional symptoms are uncomfortable and can affect your performance at work or play, your physical health, or your relationships with others:

  • Depression, moodiness
  • "Butterflies in the tummy”
  • Irritability, frustration
  • Memory problems
  • Lack of concentration
  • Trouble thinking clearly
  • Feeling out of control
  • Substance abuse
  • Phobias
  • Overreacting to problems.
